- 195 - Tennessee Lady Vols coach and Hall of Famer Pat Summitt, arguably the most successful Division I college basketball coach--men's or women's--of all time, is born in Clarksville, Tennessee.
- 1953 - The Atlantic Coast Conference officially comes into existence.
- 1990 - The Piston's Vinnie Johnson (above) nails the game-winning shot over Portland's Jerome Kersey in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, securing Detroit's second consecutive NBA championship.
- 1992 - Chicago sets an NBA Finals record by overcoming a 15-point deficit (79-64), after three quarters, and scoring 33 points over the final 12 minutes to defeat Portland, 97-93, in Game 6 to clinch its second straight NBA Championship.
- 1995 - The Rockets became the first sixth-seeded playoff team to win an NBA title, following a 113-101 Game 4 triumph over Orlando at The Summit in Houston.
- 2007 - San Antonio wins the NBA Finals, sweeping LeBron James's Cleveland team. Tony Parker is named series MVP, the first time a European-born player has been so honored.
