- 1919 - (Below) The first game of the first international basketball tournament tips off at the Inter-Allied Games, in Paris. The game is played outdoors on stretched canvas. It only rained in the second half. The U.S. team, led by future Hall of Famer Max Friedman, beats Italy easily, 55-17.
- 1936 - NBA legend Hal Greer is born in Huntington, West Virginia.
- 2002 - Yao Ming is selected by the Houston Rockets with the draft's first pick, the first time a player who had played neither high school or college basketball in the United States was the top selection.
