  • 1883 - Right: Hall of Famer Ed Wachter, one of the finest pro players of the first two decades of the 20th Century, is born in Troy, New York.
  • 1938 - Legendary European coach Mirko Novosel, is born Zagreb, Yugoslavia (present-day Croatia). He is one of four coaches ever to win three or more Olympic medals.
  • 1985 - The new Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, is officially dedicated and opened to the public.
  • 1999 - Nine internationally-born players are chosen in the 1999 NBA Draft. Three of the nine players are selected in the first round. The draftees include Wang Zhizhi, who becomes the second international player of Chinese descent to be drafted to the NBA. Sun Tao, who was the first Asian player ever drafted, was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 3rd round (67th pick) of the 1987 draft.
