- 1977 - The Washington Bullets defeat the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA Finals four games to three.
- 1993 - New Jersey Nets guard Drazen Petrovic (shown at right in a Croatian commemorative stamp), a 1993 All-NBA Third Team selection and a member of the Croatian team that won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, is killed in an automobile accident in Germany.
- 1995 - Kenny Smith of the Houston Rockets sets an NBA Finals record for most three-point field goals made in a game (7) and quarter (5), as Houston overcomes a 20-point first-half deficit and defeats host Orlando 120-118 in overtime in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
- 1998 - The Chicago Bulls defeat the Utah Jazz 96-54 in the most lopsided game in NBA Finals history. The 54 points by the Jazz is also an NBA record for fewest points in a game since the inception of the 24-second shot clock.
- 1998 - The United States comes back from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Russia, 71-65, and win the gold medal at the FIBA World Championship for Women. Lisa Leslie leads the U.S. with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
