Franchise Name History

When Minneapolis was granted a National Basketball Association franchise prior to the 1948 season, team officials named the club the Minneapolis Lakers. The name was based on the thousands of lakes in the state and the state motto "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." The team went on to win the league championship in their inaugural season.

When the team moved to Los Angeles prior to the 1960 season, they brought the team name of Lakers with them. It was ironic that the team became known as the Los Angeles Lakers because of the fact that there are few, if any, lakes in the Los Angeles area.
