- 1958 - Cincinnati Royals star Maurice Stokes collapses after a playoff game and slips into a coma. He is diagnosed with "post-traumatic encephalopathy, a brain injury that damaged his motor control center." He is left permanently paralyzed and dies 12 years later.
- 1961 - Terry Cummings, 1983 NBA Rookie of the Year, is born in Chicago, Illinois.

- 1967 - (Right) Norm Drucker issues Wilt Chamberlain two technical fouls. It is the only time any NBA referee has the audacity to eject Wilt from an NBA game.
- 1981 - The Golden State Warriors lose their tenth consecutive overtime game, stretching over two seasons, to set the NBA record. Since then, two other teams have managed to tie the record: the Atlanta Hawks (2002-05) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (1992-95).
- 1997 - North Carolina defeats Colorado, 73-56, giving Coach Dean Smith his 877th victory, putting him one win ahead of the legendary Adolph Rupp, and thus at the top of the career victory list.
- 2002 - Miami Heat broadcaster Eric Reid reaches a career milestone as he broadcasts his 1,000th regular season game as Miami faces the New Jersey Nets in New Jersey.
- 2007 - Virginia Commonwealth pulls off one of the biggest upsets of the 2007 NCAA tournament, upsetting Duke, 79-77.
