- 1898 - Hall of Fame coach Everett Dean, who coached Stanford to national championships in basketball and baseball, is born in Livonia, Indiana.
- 1920 - Tennessee's Lady Vols win their first inter-collegiate game, beating Martha Washington College, 18-10.
- 1971 - The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, long considered the step-child of Kentucky basketball, face the Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament Mideast Regional Semifinals. The Hilltoppers crush the Wildcats, 107-83, behind Jim McDaniels's 35 points.
- 1971 - Dean Meminger of the undefeated Marquette Warriors fouls out with five minutes to go, and Ohio State pulls out a 60-59 victory in the Mideast Regional Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. The loss ends Marquette's 39-game winning streak.
- 1974 - Indiana defeats USC, 85-60, to win the first-ever Collegiate Commissioners Association Tournament Championship.
- 1984 - The NBA begins its association with the Special Olympics during the era of Commissioner Larry O'Brien, who first became involved with the program through his work with the Kennedy family. In addition to creating public service announcements, NBA coaches and players run clinics for Special Olympics coaches.
- 1990 - Loyola Marymount swamps Michigan, 149-115, setting a record for most team points in an NCAA Division I Men's Tournament upset. Loyola's 21 three-pointers set the record for threes made and the 264 total points still stands as a tournament record for combined points by two teams. Jeff Fryer leads the way with 44 points, 33 of them from behind the arc.
- 1991 - The Philadelphia 76ers retire Wilt Chamberlain's No. 13 jersey, only the fifth jersey ever retired by the Sixers.
- 1993 - Darrell Hawkins (Arkansas) steals the ball eight times from Holy Cross, setting a new NCAA Division I Men's Tournament record.
