- 1928 - Hall of Fame Boston Celtics center Ed Macauley, winner of the MVP award in the first NBA All-Star Game, is born in St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1952 - The St. John's Redmen avenge an earlier 41-point loss, beating top-ranked Kentucky, 64-57, in the East Regional championship game of the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament. The loss ends Kentucky's 23-game winning streak.
- 1953 - At the first FIBA World Championship for Women tournament, the U.S. team beats host Chile, 49-36, to capture first place.
- 1969 - Lew Alcindor, now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, scores 37 points and pulls down 20 rebounds to lead UCLA to its third consecutive NCAA title. The Bruins roll past Rick Mount and Purdue, 92-72. Alcindor finishes his three-year career at UCLA with an 88-2 record.
- 1969 - West Chester State crushes Western Carolina, 65-39, to win the first-ever women's collegiate national championship. The game is played using the six player format.
- 1975 - The Kentucky Wildcats upend the previously undefeated Indiana Hoosiers, 92-90, in the Mideast Regional Final of the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament.
- 1984 - Indiana sends North Carolina packing, upsetting the top-ranked Tar Heels, 72-68, in the East Regional Semifinals of the NCAA tournament. The Hoosier's Dan Dakich holds Player of the Year Michael Jordan to 13 points, one rebound and one assist.
- 1990 - The UConn Huskies defeat the Clemson Tigers on a buzzer-beating shot by Tate George, off of a full court pass from Scott Burrell.
- 1992 - Oklahoma State shoots an astounding 28 of 35 from the field (80.0%) against Tulane to set the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament field-goal percentage record.
- 1995 - Boston Celtic great Reggie Lewis' #35 jersey was retired by the team as a memorial to him.
- 2005 - Tennessee Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt wins her 880th game, breaking North Carolina men's coach Dean Smith's former NCAA Division I record of 879 wins.
