- 1939 - In what some experts say is the biggest upset in pro basketball playoff history, the barnstorming Renaissance Five (above) beat the NBL champion Oshkosh All-Stars, 34-25, to win the first annual World Professional Basketball Tournament in Chicago. Sports reporters of the day make no mention of the fact that all the Rens are black and the All-Stars are all white.
- 1944 - Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry, the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring, is born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
- 1950 - The City College of New York (above) beats Bradley, 71-68, to win the NCAA tournament championship just weeks after winning the NIT championship. They are the only team to win both crowns in the same season.
- 1975 - In the NCAA Semifinals UCLA survives in double overtime, 75-74, against Louisville. Cardinals guard Terry Howard missed the front end of a one-and-one near the end of the game -- his only miss in 28 attempts that season. After the game, UCLA Coach John Wooden announces he will retire after the Championship game.
- 1977 - The Marquette Warriors defeat North Carolina, 67-59, to capture their only NCAA title. Immediately after the game a tearful Marquette Coach Al McGuire announces his retirement from coaching.
- 1987 - Mark Wade (UNLV) dishes out 18 assists in a national semi-final game against Indiana, setting a new NCAA Division I Men's Tournament record.
- 1990 - Chicago Bull Michael Jordan scores a regular season career-high 69 points, during the Bulls’ 117-113 road win at Cleveland.
- 1992 - Down by one to Kentucky with two seconds remaining on the clock, in overtime, Duke's Grant Hill heaves an inbounds pass some 80 feet to Christian Laettner near the foul line. Laettner dribbles once, fakes right, turns left and sinks a 17-footer to win the NCAA East Regional championship game and earn another trip to the Final Four. Many consider it the most exciting moment in the history of the NCAA tournament.
- 2006 - The Milwaukee Bucks set an NBA single-game record for most three-pointers in one quarter. They hit 11 in the third quarter against the Phoenix Suns.
