- 1945 - Hall of Fame guard Walt Frazier, who led the New York Knicks to their only two NBA Championships, is born in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 1952 - Minneapolis Lakers center George Mikan (right) scores 47 points (an NBA Playoff record at the time) against the Rochester Royals in Game 1 of the Western Division Finals. The Lakers still lose, 88-78.
- 1960 - Boston Celtics center Bill Russell hauls down an NBA Finals record 40 rebounds, as the Celtics lose to St. Louis, 113-103. On April 18, 1962, Russell matched his 40-rebound effort in a Game 7 overtime win against the Los Angeles Lakers that gave Boston the 1962 NBA championship.
- 1962 - Elgin Baylor (45) and Jerry West (41) of the Los Angeles Lakers become the first teammates to both score 40 or more points in an NBA Playoff game, as the Lakers lose to Detroit, 118-117, in a Western Division Finals game.
- 1976 - Indiana rallies from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Big Ten rival Michigan, 86-68, to win the NCAA title. The Hoosiers finish the season 32-0 and are the last NCAA Division I men's team to go undefeated for an entire season and tournament.
- 1982 - The world meets Michael Jordan as the North Carolina freshman hits a jump shot with 15 seconds left to beat Georgetown, 63-62, in the NCAA title game.
- 1990 - Houston’s Hakeem Olajuwon becomes just the third NBA player to record a quadruple-double, with 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 blocks in the Rockets’ 120-94 win over Milwaukee.
- 1998 - The Indiana Pacers manage a paltry 54 points, losing to San Antonio, who put up 74, in the lowest-scoring NBA game since the adoption of the shot clock in 1954.
- 2003 - Dwyane Wade leads Marquette to a 83-69 upset win over Kentucky in the Midwest Region championship game of the NCAA tournament. Wade finishes up with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
