- 1906 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, later renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association, is established to set rules for amateur sports in the United States.
- 1923 - Don Barksdale, UCLA All-American and the first African American to play in an NBA All-Star Game, is born in Oakland, California.
- 1975 - Hall of Fame Coach John Wooden (right) goes out in style. Having announced that the NCAA championship game would be his last, his UCLA Bruins use their speed to defeat a taller and stronger Kentucky team, 92-85. He finishes with a career record of 664-162.
- 1982 - The NBA and the Players Association reach a four-year agreement that included a revenue-sharing plan, the first of its kind in team sports. Players receive 53 percent of revenues starting the 1984-85 seasons, in return for minimum and maximum payrolls.
