- 1922 - Hall of Famer Andy Phillip, a five-time NBA All-Star, is born in Granite City, Illinois.
- 1954 - The Minneapolis Lakers and Milwaukee Hawks take part in a unique NBA experiment during an exhibition game, with the baskets raised from 10 feet to 12 feet. The George Mikan and the Lakers win anyway, 65-63.
- 1970 - (Right) Austin Carr of Notre Dame sets the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament single game scoring record with 61 in a first-round game against the Ohio Bobcats, breaking Bill Bradley's five-year old record of 58 points. Carr also sets records for field goals made (25) and attempted (44).
- 1974 - New Orleans is granted an NBA franchise. The team would be called the New Orleans Jazz.
- 1977 - Anthony Roberts scores 65 points for Oral Roberts in a 90-89 loss to Oregon in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). It is the highest point total in an NCAA Division I postseason game.
- 1982 - Dean Smith's North Carolina Tar Heels win the ACC tournament, beating the Virginia Cavaliers, 47-45. Leading 44-43 with 7:34 remaining, the 'Heels go into a four-corner stall. They hold the ball for 7:06 before taking a shot. They prevail with free throws and rebounds.
- 1996 - With seven assists against Sacramento in the visiting LA Lakers' 102-89 victory, Magic Johnson becomes the second NBA player to register 10,000 career assists.
