- 1884 - Hall of Famer Ralph Morgan, who oversaw the development of college rules from 1905 to 1958, and who helped to found the Ivy League, is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- 1943 - With time running out Eddie Dancker banks in a desperation 25-foot hook shot from the corner to give his Sheboygan Red Skins a 30-29 win over the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons and take home the National Basketball League crown. The defeat of the mighty Pistons is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in pro ball history.
- 1952 - (Above) Uljana Semjonova, the first foreign woman to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, is born in Daugavpils, Latvia. In eighteen years of international play, she never lost a game.
- 1958 - Hall of Famer George Yardley of the Detroit Pistons becomes the first NBA player ever to score more than 2,000 points in a season. He did it in 72 games, averaging 27.8 PPG.
- 1968 - Elvin Hayes scores 49 points and pulls down 27 rebounds as his Houston Cougars down Loyola of Chicago, 94-76, in the first round of the NCAA tournament. He remains the only player to record more than 40 points and 25 rebounds in a tournament game. Hayes led the tournament in scoring and rebounding by wide margins, but he was not named to the all-tournament team.
- 1974 - The number one-ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack defeat the fifth-ranked Maryland Terrapins in overtime, 103-100. The game is for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the only ACC berth in the the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament. It is considered one of the greatest college games of all time.
- 1979 - Kevin Porter of the Detroit Pistons hands out a franchise-record 25 assists as the Pistons defeat Boston, 160-117. Porter finishes the 1978-79 season with 1,099 assists (13.4 APG), becoming the first player in NBA history to garner over 1,000 assists in a season.
- 1985 - Fat Lever of the Denver Nuggets sets an NBA record for steals in one quarter when he notches eight against the Indiana Pacers.
- 1997 - Utah’s Karl Malone becomes the fifth player in NBA history with 25,000 points and 10,000 rebounds during a 115-106 victory at Minnesota.
