From Hoopedia
Matthew White is an American college and professional basketball player.
White was the starting center for the University of Pennsylvania team that was the Cinderella team of the 1979 NCAA Division I Men's Tournament Final Four. To get there Penn upset the third-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in Raleigh.
White came to Penn unrecruited, intending to pursue a career as a concert pianist. As a 6'10" freshman, however, he was recruited by head coach Chuck Daly to fill a gap in the pivot. In 1979, his senior year, he was given the Jack Saxenmeyer Award as Penn's Most Improved Player and named to the All-Ivy League team. While White was at Penn the team won two Ivy titles. White still holds Penn school records for field goal percentage in a season (63.3% in 1978-79) and for a career (59.1%).
White was a fifth-round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1979 NBA Draft. He played professional ball in Spain for 12 years before retiring.
