- 1942 - Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, who has coached the Connecticut Huskies to two NCAA championships, is born in Braintree, Massachusetts.
- 1974 - Julius Erving (right) scores 20 points and grabs 16 rebounds to lead his New York Nets to a 111-105 win over the Utah Stars in Game 5 of the ABA championship series and to their first ABA championship.
- 1976 - The Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association fold.
- 1987 - Sleepy Floyd of Golden State sets NBA Playoff records with 29 points in the fourth quarter and 39 points in the second half as the Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 129-121, in Game 4 of the West Semifinals. Floyd finishes the game with 51 points.
- 1989 - Hall of Famer Joseph Brennan, captain of the Brooklyn Visitations when they were three-time American Basketball League champs in the 1920s, passes away at age 88.
