- 1941 - Hall of Fame coach Jody Conradt, who won 900 games as a college coach (most of them at Texas), is born in Goldthwaite, Texas.
- 1961 - Controversial NBA star Dennis Rodman is born in Trenton, New Jersey.
- 1976 - (Right) In the final game in American Basketball Association history, the New York Nets, led by Julius "Dr. J" Erving defeat the Denver Nuggets 112-106 in New York to win the 1976 ABA Championship. The Nets eliminate a 22-point deficit in the last 17 minutes to win the game.
- 1979 - Team USA wins their first FIBA World Championship for Women since 1957. Carol Blazejowski led the team in scoring, averaging 18.7 ppg. No Soviet Bloc countries participate.
