- 1923 - Basketball Hall of Fame college coach Clarence "Big House" Gaines is born in Paducah, Kentucky. He would win 828 games over 47 years at Winston-Salem State University.
- 1986 - Ralph Sampson, who teamed with Hakeem Olajuwon in the "Twin Towers" (right) alignment for the Houston Rockets, catches an inbounds pass with one second left and bounces in a turnaround jumper to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 114-112 at Los Angeles in Game 5 of the 1986 Western Conference Finals.
