- 1941 - All-American high school and college player, ABA and NBA coach and NBA team executive Rod Thorn is born in Princeton, West Virginia. Chicago fans should remember him as the Bulls general manager who insisted on drafting Michael Jordan.
- 1958 - All-American center Wilt Chamberlain announces that he will forego his senior year at Kansas and play instead for the Harlem Globetrotters.
- 1962 - Franklin Mieuli, new owner of the Philadelphia Warriors, announces that the team will move to California -- the Golden State -- and become the San Francisco Warriors.
- 1976 - Boston Celtics center Dave Cowens (right) dominates the opener of the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns with a 25-point, 21-rebound performance, as the Celtics defeat the Suns, 98-87.
- 2003 - Chamique Holdsclaw of the Washington Mystics breaks the WNBA record for rebounds in a game, grabbing 24 in a season-opening win over the Charlotte Sting. She also adds 22 points and becomes the first WNBA player to record two 20-point, 20-rebound performances in a career.
