- 1922 - Howie Dallmar, who played on the Philadelphia Warriors squad that won the first BAA championship, is born in San Francisco, California.
- 1963 - Hall of Fame Detroit Pistons star Joe Dumars is born in Shreveport, Louisiana.
- 1968 - The ABA Minnesota Muskies head south to Florida and become the Miami Floridians.
- 1970 - The Soviet Union defeats Yugoslavia, 87-72, on the last day of the FIBA World Championship. Yugoslavia, however, still takes home the gold medal in the round-robin tournament.
- 1979 - Tracy McGrady, seven-times selected an NBA All-Star, is born in Bartow, Florida.
- 1999 - Orlando Magic head coach and Hall of Famer Chuck Daly (right) resigns from his position. The 68-year-old Daly made his debut as an NBA head coach in the 1981-82 season, coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers for 41 games as an interim replacement. Daly later won two NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons and led the “Dream Team” to gold in the 1992 Olympic Summer Games.
