- 1965 - Billy Donovan, who coached the Florida Gators to two straight NCAA championships, is born in Rockville Centre, New York.
- 1976 - Seven-footer Radoslav Nesterovic, center for the Toronto Raptors, is born in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
- 1998 - The USA Women's National Team defeats China, 70-54, in a second-round game, on its way to the title at the 13th FIBA World Championship in Germany. Lisa Leslie (right) led all American scorers in the tournament with a 17.1 ppg average.
