Mitch Richmond became the first player in Sacramento-era history to have his jersey retired (December 5, 2003). Richmond ranks among the top five in franchise history in points, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, free throw percentage, steals, three-pointers made and attempted, and three-point field goal percentage. He became the first Sacramento King to be named to the All-Star Game, and earned the All-Star MVP award in 1995 after tallying 23 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Also while with Sacramento, Richmond represented the United States in the 1996 Olympics, winning a gold medal.

Richmond was drafted 5th overall in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors, following two years at Kansas State, where he averaged 20 points per game, and two years at Moberly Junior College in Missouri.
