By the late 1980s, many of the NBA arenas, with the exception of only a few, were old and outdated and resembled the gymnasiums and municipal auditoriums of our earlier years. In 1987, the Palace of Auburn Hills opened as the new home of the Detroit Pistons and sparked a new era for the NBA (suites, club seating, stores, restaurants, sound systems, video scoreboards, dance teams, etc.) By 2008, all 30 NBA teams will be playing in arenas that were opened or renovated after 1987.
