The Hornets take great pride in building a positive, lasting impact as a contributing partner in their community. It is the team’s personal conviction to touch the lives of those who share their home. Since the organization’s inception, the Hornets have created a variety of programs and partnerships to offer a message of hope, future and dreams and are steadfastly committed to making their community a better place to live. Hoops for homes
Hoops for Homes, a program in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, provides much-needed housing to those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The program will foster the construction of 20 new homes in the New Orleans area.
Read to achieve
The Read to Achieve program is a NBA initiative, in which all 30 teams participate, designed to promote adults reading with kids and online literacy. It is a year-round program designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading that reaches an estimated 50 million children a year. Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports.
Books and bugs
The "Books and Bugs" program challenges elementary school students to make reading a part of their daily life. As part of the program, children focus on spending more of their time reading. Participating have the opportunity to receive a variety of incentives.
SUMMER HOOPS CLINICS
The Hornets hold numerous fun-filled clinics throughout the summer months for children. The clinics feature speeches from Hornets players and coaches.
WISH REQUESTS
Throughout the season, the Hornets work with various organizations to grant wishes for terminally and chronically ill children from around the country. For more information, contact the Community Relations Department.
DONATION REQUESTS
Charities and organizations seeking support for an upcoming event or program should send a formal request to: Community Relations Department New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets 210 Park Avenue, Suite 1850 Oklahoma City, OK 73102 Or send fax requests to (405) 208-4601.
The request must appear on official organization letterhead and be delivered at least four weeks prior to the event. Please include the date and purpose of the event, the 501c-3 tax number for the organization and a contact name, telephone number and address.
PLAYER SECTIONS
Several Hornets players purchase 20 tickets per game throughout the season. The tickets are given to underprivileged children through various non-profit organizations.
HORNETS VISITS/PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS/SPEAKER'S BUREAU
Players, coaches, broadcasters, Honeybees and Hugo the Hornet make countless visits to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and community service clubs throughout the year.
