The New York Wanderers were a professional team, based in New York City, that played in the National Basket Ball League, the first documented professional basketball league.
The Wanderers began as the 23rd Street YMCA team, who won the first AAU tournament in 1897. Once they turned professional they were thrown out of the YMCA. Without a gym to call home they became "the Wanderers."
