- 1893 - The New York Times reports for the first time on "basket ball," a new game sweeping the country and the world. The game "is a modified kind of football with every element of roughness eliminated" and is particularly popular in women's colleges.
- 1975 - The San Diego Sails of the American Basketball Association fold.
- 1993 - New Jersey retires the No. 3 jersey worn by the late Drazen Petrovic (above) prior to a game at the Meadowlands Arena with Indiana. On hand for the ceremony are NBA Commissioner David Stern, Petrovic's former Croatian teammates Dino Radja and Stojko Vrankovic, his father Jole, mother Biskera and brother Aleksander.
