- 1900 - Hall of Famer Joseph Brennan, captain of the Brooklyn Visitations when they were three-time American Basketball League champs in the 1920s, is born in Brooklyn, New York.
- 1935 - Ten-time AAU Tournament MVP, Nera White is born in Macon County, Tennessee.
- 1947 - Four-time NBA All-Star Bob Dandridge is born in Richmond, Virginia.
- 1952 - The NBA used to have a reputation as a physical league. Eight Syracuse Nationals players foul out, along with five Baltimore Bullets, in an overtime game. The referees allow Syracuse to play disqualified players, but assess the team a technical foul along with each personal foul they commit. Baltimore eventually prevails, 97-91.
- 1960 - Elgin Baylor establishes a new NBA single-game scoring record, tallying up 71 points, as his Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, 123-108. Baylor broke the previous mark of 64 points he himself had set the previous season.
- 1966 - Bill Russell is appointed player-coach of the Boston Celtics by Red Auerbach making him the first African American head coach.
- 1973 - Hall of Famer Honey Russell passes away at age 71. He played in some 3,200 pro games and coached the Boston Celtics and the Seton Hall Pirates.
