- 1928 - Boston Garden officially opens to the public.
- 1944 - Hall of Famer and legendary college coach of the Syracuse Orangemen, Jim Boeheim, is born in Lyons, New York.
- 1945 - Twelve-time NBA All-Star, Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes is born in Rayville, Louisiana.
- 1959 - Connie Dierking of the Syracuse Nationals becomes the first NBA player to foul out of a game in the first quarter. Even without him the Nats beat the Cincinnati Royals, 121-116.
- 2000 - Jason Kidd of the Phoenix Suns ties the NBA record for turnovers in a game when he turns the ball over 14 times in a 90-85 loss to New York. (John Drew of Atlanta set the record in 1978.)
