- 1944 - Louie Dampier, selected to seven American Basketball Association All-Star teams, is born in Indianapolis, Indiana.
- 1985 - Cheryl Miller appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated (right). It is the first time a woman basketball player is so honored. She shares the cover with Bruce Dalrymple and Mark Price of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Tech would go on to lose in the 1986 NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen, while Miller would go on to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
- 1993 - Shaquille O'Neal puts on a monster show for the fans at the Meadowlands. He scores 24 points, grabs 28 rebounds and blocks 15 shots (tying Manute Bol for the second-highest total in NBA history) during the Magic’s 87-85 victory over the Nets.
- 1997 - A.C. Green of the Dallas Mavericks breaks Randy Smith's record for consecutive games played when he enters his 907th game.
