- 1939 - (Right) James Naismith, inventor of basketball, passes away in Lawrence, Kansas.
- 1963 - Sixteen-year NBA veteran Johnny Newman is born in Danville, Virginia.
- 1968 - In one of the most bizarre American Basketball Association publicity stunts (in a league known for bizarre stunts), 5'3" jockey Penny Ann Early becomes the first woman to "play" in an ABA game. She inbounds a ball, her Kentucky Colonels teammates call a time-out, and she leaves the game, never to return.
- 1986 - The Boston Celtics down the San Antonio Spurs, 111-96, at the Boston Garden, setting an NBA record with their 38th consecutive home victory.
- 1992 - Reggie Miller explodes for 57 points to set an Indiana Pacers team scoring record, as the Pacers defeat the host Charlotte Hornets, 134-122.
- 2003 - Scott Skiles returns to the NBA as head coach of the Chicago Bulls after a two-year absence.
