- 1881 - Robert Douglas (right), owner and coach of the Renaissance Five (also known as the New York Rens), is born in St. Kitts, British Virgin Islands.
- 1960 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors sets an NBA record when he misses all 10 of his free throw attempts against Detroit.
- 1988 - The NBA's newest expansion franchises - Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat begin play in the 1988-89 season. In front of 23, 388 fans at the sold-out Charlotte Coliseum, the Charlotte Hornets, playing their first NBA game, are defeated by the Cleveland Cavaliers, 133-93.
- 1993 - The NBA Board of Governors awards an expansion team to Toronto, Canada, bringing the total of teams to 28.
