- 1949 - During pre-game warm-ups at the Boston Garden, Chuck Connors of the Boston Celtics puts up a two-handed set shot, hits the rim and shatters the backboard. It is the first shattered backboard NBA history.
- 1954 - The U.S. wins the Second FIBA World Championship tournament, going undefeated. The U.S. is represented by the AAU champion Peoria Cats team (above). Host-country Brazil comes in second.
- 1961 - Hall of Famer and streetball legend Connie Hawkins makes his professional debut for the Pittsburgh Rens of the American Basketball League, in a 87-82 victory over the Cleveland Pipers. The nineteen year-old Hawkins led all scorers with 22.
- 1974 - Six-time NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse is born in Kinston, North Carolina.
- 1982 - With a 99-91 loss to the New Jersey Nets, the Cleveland Cavaliers lose their 24th consecutive game (over two seasons), setting an NBA record.
- 1988 - The Palace of Auburn Hills opens, new home of the Detroit Pistons. The Bradley Center opens, new home of the Milwaukee Bucks.
- 1993 - San Antonio, playing its first regular season game at the new Alamo Dome, establishes an NBA record for opening night attendance by drawing 36,523 fans. The Spurs defeat the Golden State Warriors, 91-85.
- 1993 - The Houston Rockets beat the New Jersey Nets, 110-88, to begin their 15-game start-of-season winning streak, tying the 1948 Washington Capitols for the best start in NBA history.
