- 1895 - Howard Cann, who led New York University to the AAU Championship as a player and to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship as a coach, is born in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
- 1994 - (Right) Frank McGuire, who led the North Carolina Tar Heels to the 1957 NCAA basketball championship against Wilt Chamberlain and the University of Kansas, passes away in Columbia, South Carolina. McGuire hired Jayhawk Dean Smith as an assistant coach.
- 1996 - Norm Nixon, point guard for the 1980 NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, is born in Macon, Georgia.
