- 1894 - In Crawfordsville, Indiana, the Crawfordsville YMCA defeats the Lafayette Y in the first basketball game played in Indiana. There were no reports of hysteria, Hoosier or otherwise, at the time.
- 1940 - New York Knicks legend, Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere is born in Detroit, Michigan.
- 1963 - The Boston Celtics celebrate two of their great players. Ed MacAuley (#22) and Bob Cousy (#14) are the first Celtics to have their numbers retired.
- 1968 - The Milwaukee Bucks debut against the Chicago Bulls in Milwaukee Arena. Jon McGlocklin scores the first points in team history, but the Bulls prevail, 89-84.
- 1970 - Two new NBA franchises take the floor for the first time. The Portland Trail Blazers outlast the Cleveland Cavaliers, 115-112.
- 1975 - Stanford Cardinal star Jamila Wideman is born in Denver, Colorado.
- 1980 - (Right) Sue Bird, the only woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal, an NCAA championship, a WNBA Championship and a EuroLeague championship, is born in Syosset (Long Island), New York.
- 1997 - The McDonald's Championship returns to Paris with the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls taking part. Traveling for the first time outside North America, the Bulls compete against five of the best teams in international competition: Olympiakos Piraeus, Atenas de Cordoba, PSG Racing, F.C. Barcelona and Benetton Treviso. Led by Michael Jordan, the Bulls defeat PSG Racing, 89-82, in the semifinals and European champions Olympiakso Piraeus, 104-78, in the finals. During the three-day competition, Jordan scores 55 points in two games and wins MVP honors.
