- 1896 - Hall of Famer Nat Holman, one of the early pro basketball players and one of the game's most important innovators as a coach, is born in New York City.
- 1960 - Relocated to the West Coast after 13 years in Minneapolis, the Lakers open their inaugural season as the Los Angeles Lakers with a 140-123 loss to the Cincinnati Royals.
- 1992 - The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat meet in a special preseason game at sold-out Miami Arena to benefit the south Florida victims of Hurricane Andrew. Chicago wins the game, 111-94, with the teams raising over $500,000 for charity.
