- 1925 - Hall of Famer Slater Martin, who played on five NBA championship teams, is born in El Mina, Texas.
- 1964 - Hall of Famer and New Jersey Nets star Drazen Petrovic (right) is born in Croatia. He would die tragically in a car accident at 29 years of age.
- 1976 - The San Antonio Spurs, one of four American Basketball Association teams invited to join the NBA, make their regular-season NBA premiere against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Spurs prevail, 121-118.
