• 1940 - (Right) Fiery coach Bobby Knight, winner of three NCAA championships, is born in Orville, Ohio.

• 1948 - Two pro Hall of Famers are born. Seven-time NBA All-Star Dave Cowens is born in Newport, Kentucky. Farther north, six-time ABA All-Star (and one-time NBA All-Star) Dan Issel is born in Batavia, Illinois.

• 1968 - The United States wins its seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal, defeating Yugoslavia, 65-50. Nineteen year-old Spencer Haywood leads all US scorers with a 16.1 ppg average.

• 2000 - As a result of an arbitrator’s ruling that Minnesota Timberwolves, forward Joe Smith entered into a secret agreement with the T-Wolves in violation of the NBA’s salary cap rules, Commissioner David Stern directs the forfeiture of Minnesota’s next five first-round draft picks, fines the team $3.5 million and voids all contracts between Smith and the Timberwolves.

• 2004 - McMaster University defeats visiting Memorial University of Newfoundland, 73-57, in men’s basketball. Attendance for the game is 12,139, setting a new Canadian university basketball attendance record.
