- 1921 - Philadelphia Warriors Hall of Famer Jumpin' Joe Fulks is born in Birmingham, Kentucky. In the first season of the Basketball Association of America's existence, Fulks led the Warriors to the 1947 championship and led the league in scoring.
- 1934 - "Hot Rod" Hundley, known as much for his perceptive announcing as his prolific scoring, is born in Charleston, West Virginia.
- 1957 - The United States defeats the Soviet Union, 51-48, to win their second consecutive FIBA World Championship for Women title.
- 1984 - Michael Jordan (right) makes his debut for the Chicago Bulls at home against the Washington Bullets, scoring 16 points. The Bulls win 109-93.
- 1984 - Katie Gearlds, of the Purdue Boilermakers and Seattle Storm, is born in Beech Grove, Indiana.
