- 1959 - Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle is born in Ogdensburg, New York.
- 1975 - Coach, administrator, inventor, editor and poet H.V. Porter passes away in St. Petersburg, Florida. Among his many contributions to the game, he coined the phrase, "March Madness."
- 1987 - Milwaukee Bucks center Yi Jianlian (right) is officially born in Shenzhen, Guangdong, Peoples' Republic of China.
- 1992 - The Houston Rockets defeat the Dallas Mavericks, 104-102, in a preseason game held at Mexico City's Palacio de los Deportes before a crowd of 19,527. It is the first NBA game ever played in Mexico.
- 2001 - Polytechnic of Namibia defeats the Tomahawks, 102-100, to win the first-ever Namibian Basketball Championship. Polytechnic's Osvaldo Rafael is selected Most Valuable Player.
