  • 1942 - Jerry Grote, who played in eleven games with the Los Angeles Lakers, is born in San Antonio, Texas. He is better known as an All-Star catcher with the New York Mets baseball team.
  • 1993 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls announces his retirement from the NBA at a news conference. Jordan's retirement after nine seasons came less than four months after he helped lead the Bulls to their third consecutive NBA Championship. The "retirement" would last less than two years.
  • 1998 - The NBA announces that all 114 preseason games for the season are canceled because of the stalled Collective Bargaining negotiations with the NBA Players Association.
