• 1926 - Alex Groza, captain of the 1948 and 1949 national champion Kentucky Wildcats, is born in Martin's Ferry, Ohio. He was banned for life from the NBA after pleading guilty to accepting bribes to shave points while he was at Kentucky.

• 1985 - The Harlem Globetrotters sign Lynette Woodard, the first woman Globetrotter.

• 2006 - The New Jersey Nets donate all proceeds from their open practice fundraiser at Ramapo College to the American Red Cross. Each fan who orders a free open practice ticket through Ticketmaster is asked to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross, which will be matched by the Nets.
