- 1999 - John McLendon, the first African American coach elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, passes away at the age of 84.
- 2002 - The NBA Board of Governors votes to restructure the WNBA to allow individual team ownership, and to allow teams to be owned by non-NBA owners and located in non-NBA markets.
