Team officials sponsored a contest with the Orlando Sentinel so fans could send in their suggestions for the team's new nickname. Through the newspaper contest, names were narrowed down to two-Magic and Juice.

The two names were sent to a panel of local community leaders who selected Magic as the winner.

"Magic is synonymous with this area," said the team's general manager Pat Williams. "We are the tourist capital of the world. We have the Magic Kingdom and Disney World. The tourism slogan is 'Come to the Magic'."
