Rochester Royals
From Hoopedia
The Rochester Royals joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1945. One of the top professional teams in the country was the Rochester Pros, an independent barnstorming team run by Lester Harrison. They were invited to join the NBL for the 1945-46 season. The team, which had long been known as the Rochester Seagrams before briefly adopting the nickname "Pros", held a name-the-team contest and selected the nickname "Royals".
In 1948 the Royals moved from the NBL to the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of the National Basketball Association. The franchise moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957 and became the Cincinnati Royals. In 1972 the team moved to Kansas City, Missouri and became the Kansas City Kings. In 1985 the Kings moved to Sacramento and became the Sacramento Kings. For more detailed information, see Kings Franchise Name History
