- 1950 - Hall of Fame college coach Sam Barry dies at age 57. He was the driving force behind the elimination of the center jump after every basket in 1936.
- 1959 - Hall of Fame player Hortencia Marcari, one of three women selected as part of the inaugural induction class of the FIBA Hall of Fame, is born in São Paulo, Brazil.
- 1983 - After the expiration of the labor contract between the NBA and its referees, the NBA hires replacement referees during the preseason and beginning of the regular season.
- 2006 - Australia crushes Russia, 91-74, to win the FIBA World Championship for Women in Brazil. It is Australia's first such championship. Penny Taylor leads the way for the Aussies with 28 points.
