- 1933 - Two-time NBA Coach of the Year and Basketball Hall of Fame broadcaster Hubie Brown is born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania.
- 1950 - (Right) The NBA Chicago Stags fold. They were the first champions of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.
- 1951 - Hall of Fame forward Bob McAdoo is born in Greensboro, North Carolina.
- 1965 - Seven-time NBA All-Star Scottie Pippen is born in Hamburg, Arkansas.
- 2000 - Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce is stabbed 11 times in the chest at a Boston nightclub. Despite the injuries, he goes on to play in all 82 2000-01 regular season games and sets new career highs in scoring, minutes and assists.
- 2002 - The United States defeats Russia, 79-74, to win the FIBA World Championship for Women. Sheryl Swoopes (18 points) and Lisa Leslie (17) led the US in the final game and throughout the tournament.
