1988 - Yugoslavia's men's and women's teams make it to the gold medal games at the Seoul Olympics, but both have to settle for the silver. The Soviet men defeat the Yugoslavian men, 76-63, to win the gold medal. The Soviets are led by 7'3" center Arvydas Sabonis (right), who scored 20 and pulled down 11 rebounds in the medal game. The US Women turn back a tenacious Yugoslavian team, 77-70, to take the gold. Katrina McClain leads the team, averaging 17.6 ppg and 10.4 rpg.

1993 - The NBA awards an expansion franchise to Toronto, Canada. The team will eventually be known as the "Raptors."

2000 - Undefeated Team USA turns back France, 85-75, to win the Men's gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. A balanced scoring attack is led by Vince Carter's 14.8 ppg average. (These Olympics are best remembered by many for Carter's "Dunk of Death." See Dunk of Death.) The US Women win the gold medal, defeating host Australia, 76-54, rolling to an 8-0 record. Leading the American effort are Lisa Leslie (15.8 ppg), Sheryl Swoopes (13.4 ppg) and Yolanda Griffith (11.5 ppg).
