Shaanxi Kylins

The Shaanxi Gaitianli Kylins (Simplified Chinese: 陕西盖天力麒麟; Pinyin: Shǎnxī Gàitiānlì Qílín) or Shaanxi Gaitianli or Shaanxi Kylins are a basketball team in the North Division of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), based in Xi'an, Shaanxi. They are also known as Shaanxi Dongsheng Kylins (陕西东盛 Pinyin: Shǎnxī Dōngshèng) or Shaanxi Dongsheng Gaitianli (陕西东盛盖天力 Pinyin:Shǎnxī Dōngshèng Gàitiānlì) or Shaanxi Dongsheng Gaitianli Kylins (陕西东盛盖天力麒麟 Pinyin:Shǎnxī Dōngshèng Gàitiānlì Qílín).

A kylin is a mythical hooved Chinese chimerical creature known throughout various East Asian cultures, and is said to appear in conjunction with the arrival of a sage. It is a good omen that brings rui, roughly translated as "serenity" or "prosperity". It is often depicted with what looks like fire all over its body.

CBL to CBA

The team was founded in November 2000 by Xi'an Dongsheng Group (西安东盛(企业)集团 Pinyin:Xīān Dōngshèng (Qǐyè) Jítuán). In August 2001 they won the Chinese Basketball League (the second-division league) championship and were promoted to the CBA. The transition has been a disappointing one.

In the 2004–05 season, the Shaanxi Kylins finished in fifth place in the North Division, out of the playoffs. In 2005–06, they finished sixth, again out of the playoffs. The Kylins did not fair well in the 2006-07 season, finishing with a 9-21 mark. Things went further downhill in 2007-08, when they completed the season with a 6-24 mark.

IBL

The team is scheduled to participate in the 2008 season of the International Basketball League. The IBL is a spring/summer league based in Portland, Oregon, USA. They will be housed at the United States Basketball Academy.
