Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year
From Hoopedia
Since Sports Illustrated magazine began naming the Sportsman of the Year in 1954, ten basketball players have been honored.
The first was Ohio State's Jerry Lucas in 1961. The most recent one was Dwyane Wade in 2006. While many great players were singled out, you may be surprised by the ones who were not. Only two coaches -- John Wooden and Dean Smith -- have made the cut, though no one would argue that they didn't deserve it. Lucas is the only college player ever named. No NBA coach has ever been named Sportsman of the Year.
