In the 1966 NCAA championship game, a game with tremendous implications for college basketball in the midst of the Civil Rights movement, Texas Western, coached by Don Haskins, became the first team to start five African American players in the championship game. Their opponents, the powerhouse Kentucky Wildcats, coached by the legendary Adolph Rupp, made history by being the last team to start five white players in the championship game. Texas Western won, 72-65.

A major Hollywood treatment of the story, Glory Road, came out in 2006. Some criticized the movie for soft-peddling the racism faced by the Miners.
