In 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed and fragmented into its constituent republics. Leaders of a number of the former Soviet republics decided to continue to compete as a unified entity in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. The Women's team won the gold medal, while the Men's team placed fourth, losing the bronze medal to former Soviet republic Lithuania.

The Unified Team was a joint team consisting of twelve of the fifteen former Soviet republics. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania competed separately. The team has been informally called the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) team, though Georgia was not yet a member of the CIS when it competed as part of the Unified Team. They competed under the Olympic flag. The Unified Team did not compete anywhere else, except in the 1992 Winter Olympics.
